The School Board and Frederick County Board of Supervisors held a joint meeting on February 22, 2017, to discuss the Superintendent’s Proposed FY18 Budget. School Board Chairman John Lamanna voiced appreciation for the Board of Supervisors’ willingness to meet with the School Board to discuss the Superintendent’s Proposed FY18 Budget. Dr. Lamanna also reviewed the process the School Board uses to develop its budget.
Schools Superintendent David Sovine highlighted his proposed budget for FY18. Following the presentation, Dr. Sovine and school staff responded to questions from members of the Board of Supervisors.
Dr. Lamanna informed the Board of Supervisors that the School Board would still like the Board of Supervisors to take some action on the requests for appropriation for the construction of the fourth high school, construction of the 12th elementary school and the Armel Elementary School addition/renovation. Stonewall District School Board member Frank Wright asked the Board of Supervisors to fully fund the Superintendent’s Proposed FY18 Budget. Mr. Wright also asked the supervisors to take action on the appropriation requests for the CIP projects and provide direction to the School Board on a path forward collectively, not as individuals.
Board of Supervisors Chairman Charles DeHaven indicated that the supervisors intend to take some action on the requests and are still working to determine how much funding may be available for the projects. Dr. Sovine suggested the two Boards work together to develop a multi-year plan to address both capital and operational needs.
