Naming of Frederick County’s 12th Elementary School

The new elementary school that’s being constructed in Snowden Bridge will welcome students for the start of the 2020-2021 school year. The community had the opportunity to make suggestions for the name of the school from September 30-October 12, 2018. During the School Board meeting on November 7, 2018, Stonewall District Board Member Frank Wright shared that the School Naming Committee has recommended the new school be named Jordan Springs Elementary School. The Board will take action to formally name the school at its meeting on December 4, 2018.

Naming a school is a formal process. The process is guided by Frederick County School Board Policy 614P, Community Relations- Naming of School Facilities and Regulation 614R, Community Relations- Naming of School Facilities. Please be aware that naming the school is the prerogative and responsibility of the Frederick County School Board.

The following steps were taken to engage the community in the school naming process:
  • A School Naming Committee, including student and parent representatives from the affected schools (Stonewall and Redbud Run elementary schools), FCPS staff and community leaders, was formed to develop possible names for the new school and review community suggestions/feedback regarding the school’s name.
  • The community was given an opportunity to submit possible names for the new school.
  • The School Naming Committee reviewed all suggested school names and determined the best options to be considered.
  • The School Naming Committee determined the name(s) to be recommended to the School Board.
  • The School Board received the School Naming Committee's recommendation at its meeting on November 7, 2018.
  • The School Board will take action to name the school during its meeting on December 4, 2018.
Submissions are reviewed with the following guidelines:
  • Consistency with other school names at the elementary, middle or high school level, as appropriate.
  • A preference for names reflecting geographic or historical features of an area.
  • A preference for names reflecting the community/area which the school serves.
