The Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) has awarded Frederick County Public Schools a Meritorious Budget Award (MBA) for excellence in budget presentation during the 2019-20 budget year. This is the seventh consecutive year in which ASBO has presented Frederick County Public Schools with the award which recognizes school districts that have met or exceeded specific criteria designed to guide school business officials toward producing a quality school budget presentation.

In order to be considered for the award, Frederick County Public Schools submitted the School Board Approved Budget for FY20 to undergo a rigorous review based on the stringent criteria established by the MBA program. The review was completed by a team of professional auditors who have received additional MBA criteria-specific training from ASBO.

ASBO International Executive Director David J. Lewis says, “Districts that apply to the MBA or Pathway to the MBA (an introductory program that allows districts to ease into full MBA compliance) programs recognize the importance of presenting a quality, easy-to-understand budget internally and to their community. Participating in the MBA and Pathway programs provides districts with important tools and resources they need to communicate the district’s goals and objectives clearly and illustrates their commitment to adhering to nationally recognized budget presentation standards.”

In addition, the Chesapeake Chapter of the National School Public Relations Association (CHESPRA) has presented Frederick County Public Schools with several awards as part of its annual school communications contest. The CHESPRA awards competition is highly competitive and includes school divisions from throughout Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Frederick County Public Schools received an Award of Merit in the Financial Information category for the FY20 Approved Budget. Schools Superintendent David Sovine’s 2018 convocation speech “Connections for Success” received an Award of Merit in the Speech category. In the Brochure category, the school division’s 2018-19 School Emergency Guide received an Honorable Mention.

Sovine says, “We devote a great deal of attention to being transparent and keeping our staff and members of the community informed about the budget, our schools and daily operations. The members of our Finance Department and Policy and Communications Department are to be commended for the outstanding work they do which has been recognized again by both ASBO and CHESPRA. They are making a difference through their commitment to providing information that’s relevant, useful and easy to access.”
