The Frederick County School Board has adopted school calendars for 2021-22 and 2022-23. The first day of the 2021-22 school year for students will be August 23. For the 2021-22 school year, James Wood High School’s graduation ceremony is scheduled for June 8, 2022; Millbrook High School’s commencement exercises will be held on June 9, 2022; and Sherando High School’s graduation ceremony will be held on June 10, 2022.

Superintendent Proposes FY22 Budget

Schools Superintendent David Sovine presented his proposed budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2021, to the School Board on February 2. The proposal focuses on providing more competitive compensation to help FCPS attract and retain high-quality teachers and staff. Currently, the starting salary of a teacher in Frederick County is the second lowest in the region trailing Loudoun, Warren, Fauquier, Shenandoah and Page counties as well as the City of Winchester. Sovine’s proposal also focuses on positioning FCPS to better serve the community as it grows in population and diversity. The request seeks $6.7 million in additional funding from the Frederick County Board of Supervisors which is $4.2 million dollars less than the amount of additional local funding Dr. Sovine requested last year.

Stop the Spread

As the region continues to experience a growing number of COVID-19 cases, it remains important for students and staff to stay home if they are exhibiting any signs of illness including a temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher; a sore throat, cough, chills, or shortness of breath that cannot be attributed to another health condition; and gastrointestinal issues. In addition, anyone who has had close contact with someone who has, or might have, COVID-19 is to stay home. Close contact means being within six feet of an individual who has tested positive for COVID-19 for a total of 15 minutes or more in a 24-hour period with or without a face covering, or having contact with the individual’s respiratory secretions from the mouth or nose while they were contagious. A person with COVID-19 is considered to be contagious starting two days before they became sick or two days before they tested positive if they never had symptoms. As of January 29, there have been a total of 447 positive cases of COVID-19 reported among the nearly 2,900 FCPS employees (including substitutes) and more than 13,600 students since the first day of school.
