The Frederick County School Board has approved the purchase of up to 31.29 acres adjacent to the Gainesboro Elementary School/Frederick County Middle School campus in order to enhance safety at the site. The property will be purchased for no more than $325,000 and will enable the school division to construct a road in the future connecting the school campus directly to Gainesboro Road.

Schools Superintendent David Sovine says, “The school division has been working with the Virginia Department of Transportation, the Frederick County Board of Supervisors, the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office and others over the past few years in an attempt to improve the safety of the current entrance to the Gainesboro Elementary/Frederick County Middle School campus. By purchasing this piece of property and constructing a road directly connecting the campus to Gainesboro Road, we will reduce the number of buses that leave the campus and have to travel north on Route 522. In addition, the new road will provide buses that have to travel north on Route 522 with the ability to access Route 522 from its intersection with either Siler Lane or Gainesboro Road. Both of those intersections provide greater visibility than the current campus entrance on Route 522.”

A timeline for construction of the new road connecting the school campus to Gainesboro Road has yet to be determined. Once the road opens, it will be used by approximately 70 percent of the buses that serve Gainesboro Elementary School and Frederick County Middle School. Buses heading south on Hayfield Road or north on Route 522 will exit the campus via the new road and then use Gainesboro Road to access Hayfield Road or Route 522 north. Buses leaving the school campus to head south on Route 522 will continue to use the existing campus entrance.
