The Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) has awarded Frederick County Public Schools a Meritorious Budget Award (MBA) for excellence in budget presentation during the 2018-19 budget year. This is the sixth consecutive year in which ASBO has presented Frederick County Public Schools with the award. ASBO International’s MBA program promotes and recognizes the best budget presentation practices in school districts. The award is presented to school districts that have met or exceeded the criteria for the award which are designed to guide school business officials toward producing a quality school budget presentation.

In order to be considered for the award, Frederick County Public Schools submitted the School Board Approved Budget for FY19 to undergo a rigorous review based on the stringent criteria established by the MBA program. The review was completed by a team of professional auditors who have received additional MBA criteria-specific training from ASBO.

ASBO International Executive Director John Musso says, “Districts that apply to the MBA or Pathway to the MBA (an introductory program that allows districts to ease into full MBA compliance) recognize their community needs to be able to easily find and understand important district financial information. Awarded budget documents are accurate, easy to read and communicate the district’s goals and objectives. Reviewer comments help districts continually improve their budget presentation which is one reason districts apply each year.”

Schools Superintendent David Sovine says, “Transparency is critically important to public entities like school divisions, particularly with regard to the annual budget. Preparing a comprehensive budget document that meets the criteria to be considered for ASBO’s Meritorious Budget Award is challenging work, but our finance department does an outstanding job each year presenting the budget in a format that’s not only detailed, but easily understood.”
